Mr. Johnston graduated from American University Washington College of Law cum laude with both a Juris Doctorate and Master’s in Business Administration. While in law school he was a member of the American University Business Law Review and the Marshall-Brennan Constitutional Literacy Project. He has previous experience in tax controversy, while working at the Janet R. Spragens Federal Tax Clinic, and navigating non-profit tax compliance, while working at a PricewaterhouseCoopers. Mr. Johnston graduated from Northeastern University with a concentration in accounting and a minor in law and public policy. During his time at Northeastern he worked for Philips Lifeline, PowerAdvocate, and Philips all in their accounting departments.
Mr. Johnston’s prior experience in tax controversy consisted of representing low-income taxpayers in resolving a variety of outstanding tax matters before the IRS. With compassion and an understanding of how difficult it can be to deal with the IRS, he focused on finding the best solution for his clients.
During his non-profit tax work, he regularly prepared federal and state tax returns for some of the largest non-profits in the country. His work also included providing guidance on complex tax matters relating from both domestic and international activities.
Mr. Johnston’s tax controversy practice focuses on assisting clients with IRS and State tax audits and resolving their tax debts. He focuses on translating the complex tax laws in an easy-to-understand way to ensure continued compliance for his clients.
Mr. Johnston’s international practice involves helping clients navigate the procedures to get back into compliance with their US filing obligations by filing or amending their tax returns to report their worldwide income through the Streamlined Offshore Procedures or filing delinquent Report of Foreign Bank and Financial Accounts (“FBARs”).
Mr. Johnston is originally from Washington state and spent his college years in Boston Massachusetts. He moved to DC for law school and has made it his home. Every year Mr. Johnston looks forward to the start of spring and the blooming of the Cherry Blossoms around the Tidal Basin.
