At Pontius Tax Law, we have former IRS Revenue Officers (RO) on our staff who are very familiar with exactly what an RO can and should do, and what they cannot or should not do. We can identify when an RO is being reasonable or unreasonable with their requests, deadlines, or determinations, whereas other legal representatives without this background may just take what the RO says at face value.
We can anticipate what an RO will do or request before they do it, so we can be extra prepared and provide the most thorough information possible, so they do not dig further into your tax situation.
As an Enrolled Agent, we can handle all types of civil IRS matters including collections, audits, penalty abatements, and international tax matters. Often an attorney will only be involved if the case is going to court. Even then, our Enrolled Agents still handle much of the day-to-day information-gathering and analysis, and they keep the attorney up to speed on the progression of the case.
While our firm does not focus on annual tax return filings for clients year after year, like many CPA and tax preparation firms do, we often file current-year tax returns for clients we are already working with on a tax controversy matter. Our main focus is fixing things after they have gone wrong, but we absolutely can help clients ensure they continue with current and future compliance
Revenue Officers know the ins and outs of how the IRS calculates your ability to pay, the resolution plans that they offer, what qualifies for those resolution plans, and how to focus the IRS’s attention on the most important factors. Many professionals only learn about these things by reading articles or IRS procedures, or attending classes. Revenue Officers have lived it and often know ways to work around them or identify what the IRS can use to its advantage. We know what the IRS finds important and we can build a case showing exactly what we want to show them while downplaying aspects that may not be in the taxpayer’s favor.
Our firm focuses on tax resolution and tax controversy. Often that means something has previously gone wrong and the taxpayer is unable to resolve it on their own, like unfiled tax returns, erroneously filed tax returns, unpaid taxes, incorrect processing by the IRS, and many other situations. Our former Revenue Officers know how the IRS works on many levels and can help navigate all the intricacies that most taxpayers cannot do on their own.
We can even connect with the IRS employees who are working on your matter and have intelligent conversations using “IRS lingo” that may leave other professionals confused. We can help bridge the gap between what the IRS thinks is right and what the taxpayer thinks is right.
Building a rapport with the IRS personnel assigned to a matter can make the difference between a difficult worker and someone who is willing to work with you and look at the case from a different perspective. We can make their jobs easier by knowing exactly what those IRS employees are looking for, thereby taking the focus off something that may be less advantageous to the taxpayer.
