2023 Volunteer for Vets Scholarship Winner: Kendall Cade
Personal Background:
My name is Kendall Cade, and I am a second-year junior majoring in Human Development and Family Science while minoring in Non-Profit studies at George Mason University, with the career aspiration of becoming a Marriage and Family Therapist for minorities and low-income families. My perspective on how important family is, in conjunction with having an immense desire to serve those who are underserved, was paramount in pursuing my degree and developing into the woman I am today. Being raised in a family with a generational history of service and living minutes from the most significant military naval station in the world further facilitated my substantial respect for those who wear our country’s Insignia. Serving is a lifelong commitment; through their service, service members develop their own families and dynamics through bonding interpersonal relationships. Being a service member introduces you to a supportive, collectivistic society unfathomable to civilians. My father served thirty years in the Navy, retiring as a Master Chief Petty Officer, and though he retired, he never discontinued his service. A major misconception is that when a service member retires, their service discontinues; however, service continues outside the uniform. Our country prides itself on our illustrious and distinguished military; however the care service members receive following retirement is anything but honorary. Retirement is already an intense, transitional life event, so it is exceptionally disheartening knowing Veterans who dedicate their life to service are under supported and underserved in the subsequent phases of their indefinite military career. Knowing that the rate of vulnerable Veterans grows day by day was a heavy motivator in not only submitting my proposal, but advocating for the care and support our Veterans deserve!
Reaction:
A week before winning, I checked my email. I was wondering about the status of the scholarship results, and unbeknownst to me, I would soon be contacted with the news I had won. When I learned I won, I was overcome with many emotions and sentiments. The first identifiable emotion I felt was one of gratitude and appreciation for not only PLLC but for the Veterans whom my proposal intends to serve. I called my dad and a few of my Veteran family members and expressed my appreciation and further recognition for their service and sacrifice, which allowed me not only to enter but to draft a winnable proposal. Additionally, I was elated that I won and that my proposal for Veterans was to support them. One day, I hope my proposal will come to life and that I can have an impact on the lives of our vulnerable Veterans; until then, I plan to continue advocating and supporting those who support us and our availability of freedoms.
