Mr. McGugan graduated magna cum laude from Longwood University where he was a member of the Phi Kappa Phi and Phi Alpha Theta honor societies. He has previously worked at a variety of tax law firms where he gained experience in trusts and estates, tax controversy, and international tax matters. Mr. McGugan joined Pontius Tax Law, PLLC in 2020.
During his trust and estates work, he regularly prepared probate documents throughout the DC metropolitan area. He prepared estate and gift tax returns as well as fiduciary income tax returns. Through that time, he assisted clients through difficult life transitions and strived to provide the highest level of compassion for clients during a difficult time.
Mr. McGugan’s tax controversy practice focuses on assisting clients with IRS and State tax audits and resolving their tax debts. He focuses on translating the complex tax laws in an easy-to-understand way to ensure continued compliance for his clients.
Mr. McGugan’s international practice involves helping clients navigate the procedures to get back into compliance with their US filing obligations by filing or amending their tax returns to report their worldwide income through the Streamlined Offshore Procedures or filing delinquent Report of Foreign Bank and Financial Accounts (“FBARs”).
Mr. McGugan earned the Enrolled Agent designation from the Department of Treasury in 2017. With the Enrolled Agent credential, Mr. McGugan represents taxpayers before the IRS and state taxing authorities. He zealously advocates for his clients to ensure the best results are achieved.
He is an active member of the Maryland Society of Tax Professionals (MSATP). MSATP advocates for fair and just laws and regulations both in the community and in front of the Maryland State Legislature to ensure that its members voices and our clients are heard. Additionally, MSATP produces a quarterly publication, The Free State Accountant in which Mr. McGugan is often a contributor.
